Kinsey Award
Ashley Bryson has been at SCM for less than a year, but she has made a lot of fans in her short time here. Ashley is always thorough and professional, and her warm demeanor makes her a favorite among her clients. In addition to driving, she has taken on the challenges of being a dispatcher, so don't be surprised to hear her on the phone if you give us a call. She has also recently become a trainer, doing her best to bring new drivers up to speed quickly, while instilling her sense of care and compassion in them. Congratulations Ashley!

Door2Door Rider Profile
Malden rider Tangeswary Kunarasah, or "Loga," hails from Sri Lanka and came to the United States in to join her son in 2003. Here, Loga has found many more opportunities for seniors than in her homeland. Senior centers, yoga classes, chair exercise classes, health fairs, fabric classes, and cooking classes are just some of the many activities that Loga enjoys. "Seniors are much more occupied and active here in this country," she says. Loga attends multiple Door2Door to the Arts outings, and she also calls us for rides to her medical appointments.
"Everything about Door2Door is good!" she exclaims. "Even though I'm able to walk, they walk with me, opening doors for me... You have very good people. I truly appreciate all that you do."
A true advocate of senior activities, Loga has been known to venture to the Massachusetts State House, meeting with senators and representatives to voice her concern over potential budget cuts to senior programs. "It's important!"
It's hard to tell where you might find this active senior next. "Zumba class," she says, referring to the rigorous dance exercise popular with people half her age. "I do what I can!" Loga, it is our pleasure to give you a lift!

Summer Sailing a Success
SCM is thrilled to have partnered with Community Boating, Inc. this summer to bring riders on the Charles River to enjoy sailing. We conducted open house sessions at Community Boating's Charles River boat house in June and July. SCM provided land transport, and Community Boating breezed participants across water! Thirty-one participants enjoyed an hour and a half of supervised sailing and a light lunch.
Community Boating has been serving the Boston community for more than 60 years. Their mission is to provide "sailing for all." All of their programs, boats and facilities are user-friendly to those with disabilities. For $1.00 per year, seniors and persons with disabilities can enjoy full membership benefits, including supervised sailing and how-to classes. All staff are trained in assisting sailors who require additional help.
The collaboration of these two non-profits seems destined to be a success. It is our hope that those who attended will return for further sailing adventures. SCM is working to find funding to make sailing and other outdoor activities a standing part of our services.

2011 Taste of Somerville: Scrumptious!
On June 7, more than 500 people dined for SCM's cherished cause at the 2011 Taste of Somerville. Thirty-fivearea restaurants provided tantalizing tastes of their finest fare. Attendees enjoyed generous samples and mingled on a gorgeous early summer evening. The event raised $40,000 to support our mission of promoting the independence of seniors and persons with disabilities through community-based transportation. Our tremendous thanks to everyone who attended, to title sponsors Herb Chambers and Triumvirate Environmental, and to the Taste's producers, the Somerville Chamber of Commerce Dining & Nightlife Group.
